Steven Watkins 4th Annual Memorial Ride

CHANDLERVILLE, IL, AUGUST 6, 2012/-- On Saturday, August 11, 2012, the Justice for Steven Organization will hold its fourth annual Justice for Steven Memorial ride in Chandlerville, IL. The registration for this event begins at 11:00 a.m. at Slick Penny’s, 13442 IL. Hwy 78 in Chandlerville, IL with the ride starting at 12:00 noon. Slick Penny’s is owned by the parents of Steven Watkins. Steven Watkins was killed while attempting to pick up his daughter for their court ordered visitation in November 2008. His story profiled on Dateline NBC October 8, 2010.

Steven’s parents, Dale and Penny Watkins, were awarded visitation of their granddaughter which began the first Saturday in October of 2010. Jennifer Watkins, Steven’s ex-wife has not shown up for the visitation since November of 2010.

Jennifer Watkins then fled to Florida in an attempt to escape the court ordered visitation that Dale and Penny Watkins won in family court back in 2010. Governor Quinn signed a governor’s warrant for her return to answer the contempt charges in April of 2011.

State Sen. John Sullivan (D-47), sponsored the bill SB3823, a parental visitation interference bill, passed the state legislature earlier this by passing both houses unanimously. It was passed to the Governor’s office on June 22, 2012. The governor has yet to sign the bill.

An invitation has been extended to Governor Quinn’s office to join the festivities on Saturday and sign the bill into law. “That would be most fitting” said Penny Watkins. “That would be the best idea to have the bill named after Steven to be signed at his memorial ride in his honor”. As of this advisory, there has been no answer from Quinn’s office.

No one knows why Quinn’s office is apprehensive about showing up at the memorial ride or why they won’t answer the invitation at all, but come rain, shine, Quinn or no Quinn, the 4th Annual Steven Watkins Memorial Ride will take place this Saturday.
