Arresting developments

Recent years have seen numerous surveys which suggest that incidents involving male victims and female perpetrators are more common than had previously been assumed. Men's charities have long argued that the official crime figures significantly under-represent the problem, because so few men report abuse to the authorities, and those that do are likely to be disbelieved, often to the extent of being arrested themselves when police arrive."

Plea deal reached in 2007 shooting

By Mike Allen -- Roanoke Times - Virginia 6/2/2009

"Almost two years after Jason Lamond Faulkner shot his pregnant ex-girlfriend in an altercation, the 24-year-old's capital murder case still had not gone to trial. New evidence hampered the prosecution's case, as a previously uncooperative witness came forward to testify that Tasha LaShay Nowlin was carrying a knife when she confronted Faulkner and started to punch him the night of June 9, 2007. Yet Nowlin was pregnant when Faulkner fatally shot her, and the defense faced the prospect of prosecutors showing the jury photographs of Nowlin's deceased unborn baby. The two sides reached a compromise that played out in court Monday afternoon. Martinsville Commonwealth's Attorney Joan Ziglar reduced the murder charge from capital to second-degree, and Faulkner pleaded guilty to that charge, as well as to shooting from an occupied vehicle, discharging a firearm in city limits, use of a firearm in a felony and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. The two sides made no agreement as to what Faulkner's sentence will be. At his July 17 sentencing, he faces a mandatory minimum of five years and a maximum possible punishment of 63 years."

"A 12-year-old Olympia Fields boy's Easter suicide could mean that domestic battery charges brought about two weeks ago against his father—who is alleged to have beaten the boy for not letting out the dog—will be dropped. ...Shelton said his client is devastated by his son's death and is grieving with his wife. Capehart denies ever striking the boy and plans to fight the charges if the case continues, he said. Police responding to a 911 hang-up call at the family's home on March 30 found Daniel Capehart, 31, on the driveway with a 6-inch cut on his forehead, said Andy Conklin, a spokesman for the state's attorney's office. Capehart's wife told police he had come home drunk and punched Menyarri in the chest for "not letting the dog out before school," Conklin said. The blow caused Menyarri to lose his breath, he said. After Capehart's wife told him "not to touch her son like that," he threw food at her and was coming after her when she struck him with a frying pan, Conklin said. She has not been charged."

Economy may boost violence in families

By The Eagle.com 4/13/2009

"Some hospitals report seeing more than twice as many shaken babies as a year ago. Deaths from domestic violence have increased sharply in some areas. Calls to domestic-violence hotlines have risen, too, and more than half the callers said their families' financial situation has changed recently. Across the country, these and other signs point to another troubling effect of the recession: The American home is becoming more violent, and the ailing economy could be at least partially to blame. ..."Our children and families are suffering," said Alane Fagin, who runs a Long Island nonprofit group called Child Abuse Prevention Services. "With more layoffs expected, the threat of foreclosure looming over so many and our savings disappearing, even the best parents can feel stressed out and overwhelmed. ....Not everyone is convinced domestic violence and child abuse are increasing. "So far from what I've read there is no evidence that is the case," said Ben Tanzer of Chicago-based Prevent Child Abuse. "Certainly we're concerned that certain communities may be in crisis, but we just don't know. ....Amy Wicks, a spokeswoman with the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome, said her organization has received reports from pediatricians around the country concerned about an increase in cases. "It's not just shaken baby; it's other forms of physical abuse," Wicks said. "A lot of fathers, or male caregivers, have been laid off and now they're home with the screaming baby. Sometimes the stress of a crying baby is just too much on top of everything else."..."

Wife of suburban GOP boss Gary Skoien files for divorce

| ChicagoTribune -- 3/20/

"The wife of a top suburban Republican filed for divorce Thursday, less than two weeks after she was charged with attacking him after discovering he brought two alleged prostitutes into the family home in Inverness. Eni Skoien sued Gary Skoien, her husband of nearly 13 years, and is seeking a court order to bar him from removing their three young children from the state. Gary Skoien, who is the Palatine Township GOP committeeman, has denied that the two women his wife found with him in the children's playroom were prostitutes. His wife was charged with domestic battery after Skoien told Barrington-Inverness police that she punched him and hit him with a toy guitar on March 8, according to court records. He later obtained an order of protection."

Court affirms gun law in domestic violence cases

By MARK SHERMAN Associated Press Writer 2/25/2009

"The Supreme Court on Tuesday affirmed the use of a federal law barring people convicted of domestic violence crimes from owning guns, the first firearms case at the high court since last year’s decision in support of gun rights. The court, in a 7-2 decision, said state laws against battery need not specifically mention domestic violence to fall under the domestic violence gun ban that was enacted in 1996. It is enough, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote in her majority opinion, that the victim of such a crime be involved in a domestic relationship with the attacker."
