Happy Father's Day to all fathers even those wrongly dubbed deadbeat dads

"Happy Father's Day to all fathers who love their children and are trying to make a difference in their lives.
Father's Day is good day for everyone, especially the media, to ban the phrase deadbeat dad from their vocabulary. It's not that there aren't deadbeat dads. There are. We all know fathers who don't come through with their child support payments. However, there are women who are required to pay child support and who also cannot keep up with the payments. Rarely are they called deadbeat moms."

Our Views: Fathers can bring benefit

By Orangeburg Times Democrat – South Carolina/Opinion 6/21/2009

"OUR OPINION: Legal fatherhood important for dad’s role with children Fatherhood is about more than playing the male role in conception. It’s about more than being a visitor in a child’s life. Here’s a fact for fathers on this Father’s Day: In South Carolina, 49 percent of children are born to unmarried parents. With mother often being left as a single parent, too many children lack the influence of a father."

Laptops Linked To Male Infertility

Excessive laptop use tops this list of liabilities, according to one reproductive specialist at Loyola University Health System (LUHS)."

Cancer diagnosis strengthens family bonds

".... I finally discovered a sport I enjoy: golf. My dad has always been an avid player, but I ended up on the course by accident, when I promised to let him teach me the game. It was safer and more fun than talking about his new diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. ...The aggressiveness of the disease sent us all — my parents, my brother, my sister-in-law and me — down a dark rabbit hole to Cancerland, where worst-case scenarios beckoned like carnival barkers and grief and hope undulated like a Tilt-A-Whirl."

Why Is the Press Down on Fathers?

By Trevor Traina -- Huffington Post 6/21/2009

"....As a father of two I looked forward to celebrating my day today like other fathers. However, somehow the media did not get the memo. As I scanned all the papers, I thought less about Norman Rockwell than about Norman Bates. There were stories about President Obama admonishing fathers to shape up. There were stories about President Obama's own father being AWOL. There were firsthand accounts of fathers and sons who grew up absent each other. The only thing that was missing was anything about normal fathers doing what normal fathers do. What is it with the media?..."

The misunderstood fathers

By phillyBurbs.com - Pennsylvania 6/21/2009

"....But many single teen fathers are not only willing but eager to help their partner and child, one 2005 study found. The problem is no one shows them how, parenting experts say. Little teen pregnancy research has involved teen fathers. Prevention education focuses on girls, not boys. Few support services focus on teen fathers' needs, and life circumstances leave most unequipped to deal with the responsibility of parenthood. ...Teen dads, as a whole, are a misunderstood group, said psychologist Mark Kiselica, a Newtown Township resident who has studied and worked with teen fathers for 30 years.  Studies show that less than one-third of teen fathers fit the stereotype as irresponsible and unwilling to help raise his child, said Kiselica, author of "When Boys Become Parents: Adolescent Fatherhood in America."..."

Fatherhood is still evolving

By Austin American-Statesman - Texas 6/20/2009

"Anyone who doubts that fatherhood is changing should take a quick look at the research. Compared with previous generations, more dads are staying out of the work force to care for young children, more single fathers are living with their children and more are working evening or weekend shifts to provide daytime care for their young children. All that additional time with kids means men are more hands-on than their fathers were with them."

Give non-custodial fathers more time with kids

By Michael Doherty and Herb Reichelt Bloomington Pantagraph - Illinois 6/22/2009

"....Their minimum standards for the parenting roles of separated fathers underwrites the value by which all fathers, married and separated, are measured. The de facto minimum parenting schedule used by Illinois courts remains “every other weekend” with a weekly non-overnight “visit.” This is what most divorcing fathers have to contend with. It is a minimal parenting schedule that is, according to a well-respected, national child development specialist, “child-unfriendly” and befitting of only “disinterested” fathers. ..."

DNA debunks Mich. man's hunch he was snatched tot

By YahooNews.com 6/19/2009

"After five decades of silence about what happened to his toddler son, farmer Jerry Damman was hopeful that a Michigan man's incredible claim to be the boy was true. But DNA results released Thursday disproved the possibility, closing a bizarre chapter in a long-cold case of the New York toddler who disappeared on Halloween in 1955. The tests showed John Barnes did not have the same mother as a sibling who was in a stroller at the time of the kidnapping. That meant there was no way he could possibly be the kidnapped child. Hundreds of miles north, the family members who raised Barnes in Michigan angrily rejected the suggestion he wasn't theirs. They said they'd even be willing to submit to tests to disprove his hunch that he wasn't their flesh and bone. "He pretty much lost two families today," said Cheryl Barnes, a sister who grew up with the man in northwest Michigan. "We knew that was going to be the outcome. ... My dad feels the same way. Neither of us had a doubt. My dad knows who his son is. I'm angry at my brother for putting everyone through this, turning everybody's lives upside down."..."

Searching for the Origin of Father's Day

By Mike Krumboltz -- Yahoo Buzz 6/19/2009

"Searchers have a question they'd like answered: Who started Fathers Day? Who do they have to thank for the mandatory bonding time they're spending with dear ol' dad this weekend? Lookups on "fathers's day origin" and "who started father's day" inspired us to investigate. The results of our research shook us to our very core. OK, maybe not to our core, exactly. But the story of how Father's Day came to be is still pretty interesting. A blog from a Detroit church explains that most historians credit a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd with creating the holiday. Ms. Smart Dodd was "inspired by her father, a widower and Civil War veteran named William Jackson Smart." She wanted to do something to honor his memory while paying respect to all fathers. Clearly she was a woman with a plan. Alas, not everybody agreed with her pleas to "give it up for the papas" (our words, not hers). In fact, Ms. Smart Dodd's proposal was often mocked when it first made the rounds. Folks felt it unnecessary. And the all-male United States Congress felt that having a holiday for fathers might look like they were trying to give themselves "a pat on the back." Additionally, many just plain didn't want the holiday. An article from Inspiration Line explains that, according to an article in The Spokesman-Review, "one group of men conventioneers laughed and said they didn't want a Father's Day. A National Fishing Day would be better, they told her."..."

Adopted by a man who used to date my mom

By Kate Simonson with Meghan Daum CNN.com 6/19/2009

"My dad was an electrician, and he died in an accident on the job when I was three. After his death, my mother had to raise us alone, and she was acutely aware that she was truly on her own, with no backup plan. She was fiercely strong and yet constantly fearful. I have almost no memories of my father. Instead I remember Mike Fieseler. He was a former industrial-arts teacher whom my mother dated off and on for much of my childhood. Jason and I weren't his biggest fans. He was a man of strict rules, while my mom's approach could be more properly deemed overindulgent leniency. ....Then, on February 18, 1991, when I was 17, my mother suddenly died of a brain aneurysm. One minute she was laughing with friends, enjoying an evening out; the next, she was unconscious on the floor. She never woke up. Just 19 hours later, she was dead, leaving my 15-year-old brother and me orphans. ...Generally, when children are orphaned, a family member comes forward to take them in. This didn't happen in our case. Everyone had a good reason, I suppose. My mom's father was too old to assume responsibility for us; my mother's sister and her husband had three kids of their own and weren't able to take in any others; her other two siblings were both single and worked long hours. The guardian named in my mother's will was a babysitter that none of us had seen in 15 years. But I can tell you this: Abandonment, even for very good reasons, feels awful. It was heartbreaking and terrifying to have lost the person we loved most and then to be set adrift."

Report: Modern dads get cuddly with kids

By Gabriella Boston -- Washington Times 6/21/2009

"Today's dads are more cuddly with their children than the generation before them. At least that's what dads are self-reporting in a new survey from Lever 2000, part of its Making Every Touch Count campaign. According to the survey, up to 84 percent of dads surveyed say they show more physical affection to their own children than their parents did with them. The results are not surprising to Michael J. Diamond, a Los Angeles psychologist and author of "My Father Before Me: How Fathers and Sons Influence Each Other Throughout Their Lives." "Our notion of what constitutes masculinity is changing," Mr. Diamond said. Traditionally, hard (as in authoritarian) meant masculine, and soft (as in kind) meant feminine. But these qualities are not masculine or feminine per se, he says. They - and other qualities, including affection and intelligence - are just plain human, said Mr. Diamond."

Inside Politics Weekend: Papa-palooza

By Jennifer Harper -- Washington Times 6/21/2009

"Father's Day offers something even querulous Republicans and Democrats can agree on. TV dads. Both parties said that their favorite TV dad is Cliff Huxtable of "The Cosby Show," according to a Harris Poll of 2,681 adults conducted May 11 and 18. Well, that's something, anyway. Congratulations. Coming in at second place for Republicans is Ward Cleaver of "Leave it to Beaver." And the runner-up for Democrats is Jim Anderson of "Father Knows Best." The Harris pollsters, however, noted that the nation appears to be soaking itself in warm nostalgia — oldies but goodies dominated the roster of dads, which included Ozzie Nelson of, well, Ozzie Nelson fame, and Andy Taylor of Mayberry RFD. "Of the top 15 television dads, seven of them are from shows from the 1950s or 1960s and 2 were set in the 1950s or earlier. Maybe it is the economic crisis or just a desire for the days of old, but it seems when picking their favorites, Americans are looking back to simpler times and maybe even happier times."..."

Time away from family tough on deployed dads

By Karen Goldberg Goff -- Washington Times 6/21/2009

"Before leaving for a six-month deployment, John Lenhen, a Navy chief quartermaster, left nearly 40 videos of himself reading his childrens' favorite stories. "You have to set things up in advance," says Mr. Lenhen, the Norfolk father of a 9-year-old and 6-year-old triplets. Mr. Lenhen, 33, has had four deployments in 11 years and recently was awarded the National Fatherhood Initiative's (NFI) annual Military Fatherhood Award. "If you don't put the right things in motion, you will be coming back to complete and total strangers," Mr. Lenhen says. "Unless you are proactive, it is hard to stay in touch with your family." Some 1.9 million members of the military have been deployed since 2001, according to U.S. Department of Defense statistics. More than 876,000 of those service members are parents, and 245,000 have been away twice. While there are many resources, such as military family readiness offices that prepare service members for the paperwork and logistics of being away from home, there are a growing number of resources to help with the emotional side of being a military parent. NFI is helping military branches establish programs to be a better dad, says Tim Redd, NFI's director of military programming."

BAUMGARDNER: Hard work pays off in stage five

By Julie Baumgardner --Washington Times 6/21/2009

"I recently ran into a friend I had not seen in a while. When I asked how life was treating her, she enthused, "We are finally empty-nesters. We are having so much fun! If everybody knew how good it was when the kids leave, nobody would get divorced!" It made me think about how many couples I know who have gotten caught up in the throes of children, career, etc. and ended up throwing in the towel on their marriage. The reality is marriage is hard work. Creating a lasting marriage takes skill, determination and chutzpah. Michele Weiner Davis, marriage therapist and author, has been observing relationships for years. She will be the first to tell you that marriages go through stages and predictable crises, but because people are unfamiliar with the normal hills and valleys of marriage, these predictable transitional periods often are misunderstood, causing overreactions. Ms. Weiner Davis says most marriages experience five stages."

Our fatherhood crisis

EDITORIAL: Hooray for dear old Dad

By Washington Times -- Editorial 6/21/2009

"The ideal father is hardworking, fun-loving, a good provider, understanding, wise, sometimes stern and, above all, inspiring. Yet a century ago, the popular image of the father was less radiant. Groucho Marx observed that in those days, there were many hymns to motherhood, but "nobody ever wrote any song about fathers. Father was the town schlemiel in almost every place." As the popular ditty of the time went -- "Everybody works but father and he sits around all day, "Feet in front of the fire - smoking his pipe of clay, "Mother takes in washing, so does sister Ann, "Everybody works at our house but for my old man." In 1906, Joseph Lehman, father of seven, was so driven to despair by his wife and kids singing this song that he jumped in the Des Moines River. As the popularity of Mother's Day grew, people naturally began to discuss a counterpart for dads. In 1908, the Baltimore Sun asked that families "recognize that father, with all his frailties and limitations, is a useful factor in civilization - and in the domestic economy." The Sun insisted that "the virtues of the fathers shall receive due recognition. They may eat onions, they may wear plain clothes, they may not know that more than one fork is desirable for a dinner course, but they are the salt of the earth. Lift our voices in behalf of this downtrodden creature." The Herald of Palestine, Texas, weighed in, noting that "for as little as you may see o him around the house, he is still in a limited way at least an important part of the family machinery. He goes along, plodding maybe, making the family income and paying the expenses, swearing that mother's hat is becoming when he knows he is a perjurer ... and giving Johnny the price of a new red necktie when he knows Johnny has no business wearing red. Yes, count old father in. He may not count in the social scale, but you would miss his regular income."..."

EDITORIAL: Childless on Father's Day

By Washington Times -- Editorial 6/21/2009

"Some kids will be surprising their fathers with breakfast in bed this weekend, while others will present a gift inscribed with the phrase, "world's best dad." Some men, though, will only be reminded of the heartache from losing the opportunity to become fathers. They are the third victims of abortion. ...Arthur B. Shostak, professor of sociology at Drexel University, is one of a team of academics who took a hard look at men and abortion over a 20-year period. Their findings shatter the common myth that men are more likely to abandon women who get pregnant rather than support them. Most men in the survey reported that ending a pregnancy was a mutual decision, and only 5 percent didn't support the abortion. However, nearly half of single and divorced men said they had suggested getting married and having the baby. As many as 1 in 6 men are never told about a pregnancy or an eventual abortion. Almost 50 percent of men don't show up at an abortion clinic to accompany the mother on the day of the procedure, according to Mr. Shostak and his team. While in some cases these fathers might fit the stereotype of the rogue who is abandoning the mother of his child, a large percentage opposed the abortion or were too distraught to come along. Mr. Shostak's study found that more than 1 in 4 men equated abortion to murder. A little over 80 percent surveyed said they had already begun thinking about the child that might have been born, with 29 percent saying they had been dreaming about the child "frequently." Fully 68 percent said men involved in abortions "did not have an easy time of it," and 47 percent worried about having disturbing thoughts afterward. Mr. Shostak reported that many men began to cry during his interviews."

Two men stand tall in effort to boost dads’ rights

Small gathering pays tribute to first Father’s Day

By Tom Sowa -- The Spokesman-Review 6/21/2009

"Bill Harrington made a quiet pilgrimage to Spokane, eager to celebrate the woman he calls the mother of Father’s Day. He left wondering if Spokane has a hard time recognizing its own place in history. Only a handful of people came to join Harrington’s two-part event, which started Saturday morning with remarks at the Spokane County Courthouse and ended with a wreath-laying at the west Spokane cemetery where Sonora Smart Dodd and her father are buried. The 62-year Harrington, a resident of Graham, Wash., near Puyallup, organized a celebration Saturday to mark the 100th Father’s Day. That initial Father’s Day occurred in downtown Spokane in 1910, the brainchild of Spokane resident Dodd. Dodd is credited with creating the day to recognize her own father’s role in raising six children and to give dads a day equal to Mother’s Day. ...“I was waiting for more than two months to see if anyone in Spokane was going to mark the day. When no one here was doing anything, I decided to go ahead,” he said. Both Harrington and another speaker, state Sen. James Kastama, D-Puyallup, said Father’s Day is the best time to call attention to what they say are inequities in legal and social services that tilt in favor of women and mothers in custody and divorce battles. “Fatherhood is important,” Harrington said. “More than half of all U.S. children 18 and under will not see their father on Father’s Day,” he added."

Dads prepare for fresh start

EDITORIAL: Absent dads spur decline

By TMCnet - Editorial USA 6/21/2009

"For a glimpse of what ails, tickle a keyboard. A Google search of the term "fatherhood" draws forth predictable players in the dad biz, the National Fatherhood Initiative and Fatherhood at About.com, the former offering statistics demonstrating the importance of fathers and the latter, "your one stop source for information about being a truly great dad." Ward Cleaver wouldn't have bothered clicking and needn't have. But that fictive papa is a caricature of an unsophisticated age. He has vanished and the hip are pleased. ....Among sensible people, the effects are not in dispute. Insensibility increasingly prevails. For the past half-century, America has been in a societal freefall. The country's divorce rate is the second highest in the world. That trend has coincided with other ills, such as spiraling crime, illegitimacy, drug use and inner city decay, all bemoaned by academic elites and their media minions but dismissed with sniffs when links are inferred to the devolution of the family and the systematic shedding of that dread thing called morals. ..."

In a statement, the First Lady declares this 100th anniversary of Father's Day, "not just any day."  She praised her own late-father as "our provider, our champion and our hero" and says the example Frasier Robinson, "the rock" of her family, laid out, "continues to guide me every day." She writes that while her husband, "didn't have my good fortune -- his father left when he was just two years old...he has always been determined to give our daughters what he never had, and he values being a good father more than any other accomplishment in his life."..."

Barack Obama, Father-in-Chief

By Helene Cooper -- New York Times -- 6/19/2009

"President Obama, in a rare devotion of a big block of his time to a symbolic cause, is spending much of Friday afternoon talking about Father’s Day, and the importance of mentors and father figures for young people from all walks of life. Mr. Obama began what White House officials are calling a “national conversation on responsible fatherhood and healthy families” with a series of events, including a stop at an Arlington, Virginia non-profit organization that provides technical and professional training for urban young adults. Then he was scheduled to head back to the White House for a Father’s Day event where he would host participating fathers and mentors to talk about the everyday stories of successful fathers. He has invited male students from local schools to hang out with him at the White House, along with Vice President Joseph Biden and other administration officials."

Obama tells men what kind of dads they should be

By YahooNews.com 6/20/2009

"Barack Obama got a basketball, his first name and ambition from his father. Little else. The son gave back more than he received: a lifetime of ruminations about the man who abandoned the family, a memoir named "Dreams from My Father," and endless reflections on his own successes and shortcomings as a parent of Sasha, 8, and Malia, 10. As a candidate and now president, he's been telling men what sort of father they should be. It's become his Father's Day ritual. He's asking American men to be better fathers than his own." The president showcased fatherhood in a series of events and a magazine article in advance of Father's Day this Sunday. He said he came to understand the importance of fatherhood from its absence in his childhood homes — just as an estimated 24 million Americans today are growing up without a dad. Fathers run deep in the political culture as they do everywhere else, for better and worse. Michelle Obama has said many times how her late dad, Fraser, is her reference point and rock — she checks in with him, in her mind, routinely, and at important moments."

Honoring fathers this Father's Day

By Business Gazette - Maryland 6/18/2009

"Research has shown that when both parents are actively and positively involved in their children's lives, the children are more likely to lead healthy and productive lives. This Father's Day, we acknowledge the complementary and supportive roles fathers play in the lives of their children. Families come in all shapes and sizes: intact families, mothers serving as primary caregivers, fathers serving as primary caregivers. Whatever the situation, parenting is a team effort even more so when both parents are not in the home. ....Here at the Prince George's County Office of Child Support Enforcement, however, we see firsthand how hard so many parents try to support their children both financially and emotionally despite the challenging economic times we face today. In Prince George's County, over 60 percent of noncustodial parents consistently pay their child support. To that end, this Father's Day, as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of this recognition, let's do away with the stereotype of "deadbeat" and applaud the dads who are "on beat." These dads invest time and attention to being a parent."

Obama to promote fatherhood on Friday

The president will visit a nonprofit center that helps train young adults for professional careers, and host a town hall-style meeting on personal responsibility. He also has invited male students from local schools to the White House to have fun hanging with some famous faces. Obama spent much of his own life without a father around. Fatherhood program helps men grow one day at a time

By Kimberlee Williams -- NJ.com 6/18/2009

"Since his divorce, Kevin Robinson talks to his kids more and he's more dedicated to being in their lives. But it wasn't always so amicable. "I went through a period where I was confused. I was separated from my children for about six months. I had to learn to deal with my ex." At 49, Robinson, is evolving, and he credits Newark Now's Comprehensive Center for Fathers for the changes he's made. Last year, Robinson was a part of the first class of 20 men that completed the center's fatherhood program in Newark. And in February the men from the first four classes marched in an official graduation ceremony."

Father's Day history: Tribute to a single dad

By Examiner.com 6/16/2009

"With all of the talk about deadbeat dads, absent fathers, and responsible fatherhood, you might be surprised to find out that the first Father's Day celebration was actually a daughter's attempt to recognize her father for all the sacrifices he had made as a single parent. William Smart was a Civil War veteran and widowed father of six children. His wife died giving birth to their sixth child so Mr. Smart was left to raise his children alone on a rural farm in Washington. While listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909, one of Mr. Smart's daughters, Sonora Dodd, decided that there should be a day to honor fathers. Since her father's birthday was in June, she held the first Father's Day celebration in June, 1910. Although the concept of Father's Day spread around the country, it would be many years before the holiday became official. In 1924, President Calvin Cooledge supported the idea but it was not until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson signed a bill declaring the third Sunday in June to be Father's Day. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed the law making Father's Day permanent."

Barack Obama: 'I Have Been an Imperfect Father'

By People.com 6/19/2009

"President Barack Obama has written a heartfelt Father's Day message acknowledging his own shortcomings as a dad to daughters Malia, 10, Sasha, 8. "I know I have been an imperfect father. I know I have made mistakes," Obama admits in a letter to be published in this week's Parade magazine. "There were many days out on the campaign trail when I felt like my family was a million miles away," he writes, "and I knew I was missing moments of my daughters' lives that I'd never get back. It is a loss I will never fully accept."..."

New daditude: Today's fathers are hands-on, pressure off

2009 Ohio Fatherhood Summit aims to celebrate, strengthen dads

By Robert L. Smith -- The Plain Dealer - Cleveland.com - Ohio 6/16/2009

..."The fifth annual summit, sponsored by the Cuyahoga County Fatherhood Initiative, will examine and celebrate the role of fathers with a little more firepower this year. The summit expanded from two to four days with a new co-sponsor, the Ohio Commission on Fatherhood. It features speeches by prominent local dads, like Cleveland Indians general manager Mark Shapiro. And it's making room for familismo, whatever it may mean today. The county launched its fatherhood program in 2004 to address a crisis in the black community. About 70 percent of local black children are born to an unwed mother and most will grow up without a father in the home, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Child development experts say children without dads active in their lives are more likely to live in poverty, drop out of school, commit crimes, become teen parents and perpetuate the cycle of poverty. As it sought to strengthen the black family, the fatherhood initiative quickly adapted to a growing audience. Single parenthood was rising across all segments of society. ..."

Fatherhood program helps dads be better parents

By YourHub.com - Colorado 6/15/2009

"As anyone whose dealt with a screaming toddler or rebellious teenager can attest, parenting can be tough. A program offered by Jefferson County offers support to fathers so they have the tools to be better parents. The Fatherhood Program at the Jefferson County Workforce Center's Child Support Services was started through a federal grant and is in its third year, said Ray Washington, program manager. The program helps fathers find employment by offering resume and interviewing skills and on-the-job training. In addition, a support group helps fathers become more engaged with their children, Washington said. "We address interacting with their kids, co-parenting, communication and how being engaged in their children's lives affects the children," he said."

Fathers are more involved than ever

By Red Bluff Daily News - California 6/12/2009

"The stereotype that fathers spend less time with their children is quickly becoming outdated. In fact, dads are more involved than ever in raising their children. More men stay at home to care for their kids, take paternity leave and share in household chores. In a study by the Pew Research Center last year, 56 percent of women said they thought dads were doing a better job than ever before. In recognition of Father's Day, June 21, First 5 Tehama offers the following tips to help dads be the best parents they can be."

Who needs two parents?

By Sabrina Broadbent The Guardian.co.uk – United Kingdom 6/13/2009

"Among my group of friends, I was an early casualty in the battle of love and family life. My children's father and I separated when we were 40 and they were still at primary school, a stage when not many of us were doing divorce. It caused a bit of a stir. Yet 10 years on, as we hit 50, a second wave of marital casualties is taking place. For once the clamour and chaos of family life receded, it seems that these parents found not peace but a sadness that would not go away. Was it worth staying together? Perhaps it's like this for every generation. Or maybe we are seeing the end of one kind of family life and the beginning of something better. For too long we have believed that marriage is good, divorce is bad. Two parents are better than one. Single mothers are a problem. But what if single parenting is more harmonious, more loving and more successful than the conventional model? What if two-parent families are a bit of a lie, a shop front for what is in effect single parenting? What if it's wiser not to wait for Mr Right, but to have a child on your own?"

FIU lab investigates the state of fatherhood

By Sissi Aguila -- FIU News - 6/15/2009

"Family roles have changed substantially since the 1950s. Mom now works outside the home. And dad is expected to be more involved in raising the kids. But as parental roles and responsibilities become less defined, psychologists question: Are there essential characteristics of fathering versus mothering? FIU’s Fatherhood Lab explores these issues and Psychology Professor Gordon Finley, who runs the lab, focuses specifically on how divorce impacts fathers and the development of their children. Finley has found that a father’s role is unique and far too often neglected by the family court system.  Using questionnaires and a retrospective technique in which he asked 1,989 young adults to think back on their relationship with their fathers, Finley found that children of divorce really miss their fathers. According to Finley, they are denied a relationship with them because of present-day family law and court practices. “Divorce marginalizes or severs a father’s relationship with his child,” he says. “In reality, the father becomes a visitor in his or her life. He is no longer a father in the very literal sense.”..."

Children's Aid Society workers should be reined in, critics say

By Kevin Libin -- National Post 6/12/2009

"For most of us, they are generally unseen, save for occasional mentions in news reports, when they rescue children from misery. Or, as sometimes happens, deliver it. Canada's child-welfare agencies, says University of Manitoba social work professor Brad McKenzie, have among the broadest intervention powers in the Western world. Caseworkers come armed with vaster powers than any police officer investigating crime. It is an immense authority easily abused, without vigilant restraint. It is time, critics say, they were reined in. "The social worker system, as it applies to children, is out of control, seriously out of control," says Katherine McNeil, a children's advocate who has worked with families in Nova Scotia and B.C. "And nobody's doing anything about it." Child-welfare agencies step in when kids are homeless, exploited, hungry or abused. They do not stop there. As the highly publicized neo-Nazi case in Winnipeg demonstrates, they might seize children from parents for teaching racist views, or for "emotional neglect." They have taken newborns from parents considered insufficiently intelligent; from religious families believing the Bible commands them to discipline kids with a rod. They order homeschooling parents to enroll children in public school, deeming them inadequately socialized."

Dad feels cheated on Father's Day booty

By Geoff Williams -- Parenting.com 6/15/2009

"One Mother's Day, I bought my wife what she had wanted for years -- a weeping cherry tree -- and I threw in a bird bath, so that when the tree matures, our feathered friends can happily splash and drink under its loving protection. For Father's Day, my wife gave me some boxer shorts and a tiny reading light, so I can flip through a book in bed without disturbing her. My wife is the first to admit it: For her, and for many people, Father's Day is an afterthought, a holiday just a few steps above the one that celebrates the groundhog and that other one that promotes trees. If Mom's Day and Dad's Day were in a prize fight, we all know which holiday would wind up lying in the corner of the ring, knocked-out teeth on the mat, dazed head stuck in a bucket. I've been thinking about how our society recognizes parents because Father's Day is upon us again, but also because, a while ago, my worst nightmare happened: My wife had to have surgery."

Malawi court allows Madonna to adopt second child

By Yahoo News 6/12/2009

"U.S. pop star Madonna was allowed on Friday to adopt a second child from Malawai, though the father of the 4-year-old girl said he wants her back, a plea likely to stir fresh controversy for the singer. Malawi's Supreme Court overturned a lower court ruling in April which said Madonna could not adopt Mercy James because she was not a resident of the southern African country. Rights groups have accused the government of giving Madonna special treatment and said the case would encourage foreigners to think they can adopt Malawian children at will. Mercy's father said Madonna, one of the music industry's most successful singers, should not be allowed to adopt Mercy. "No one wants to listen to me, I have protested this all along ... I want my child back but I don't know what to do now," James Kabewa told Reuters by telephone from his poor township. "Madonna cannot take her away."

Are men bad parents?

By The Week Magazine 6/11/2009
"....Plenty of guys say men aren't natural parents, said Ellie White in Britain's The Sun. In addition to Michael Lewis, who writes that fatherhood can be "boring and demoralizing," there's Ben George, editor of the literary journal Ecotone, who says men are only beginning to talk openly about the "dark moments of fatherhood." And Fox News broadcaster Steve Doocy, author of the forthcoming book Tales From the Dad Side: Misadventures in Fatherhood, says men aren't wired for parenting the way women are. Men are wired to be good parents, said Aaron Traister in Salon, but many struggle to overcome pressure from a society that still tells them they should be making money and not taking care of babies. The old gender roles started crumbling the moment our moms entered the workforce. Instead of clinging to the responsibilities men think we should have, we should "embrace the ones that are right in front of us," the ones wearing the droopy diapers."

Virginia Man Receives Military Father Award

By News Channel 8 – District of Columbia 6/10/2009

"From playing checkers to teaching his four kids to read or play catch, one active military father from Virginia does it all to stay involved in his children's lives. Chief Quartermaster John Lehnen pulls double-duty, balancing his navy career with his family, and is now being recognized for going above and beyond.
"He's a very special dad and he does things for us, a lot of things," said Kathryne Lehnen, his daughter.
Recently, the Lehnens took a trip to D.C. to watch their active dad receive the military father award. He was chosen out of 600 nominees. "Military fathers are ones that have really challenges when it comes to deployment, staying connected to their families, reconnecting once they've been deployed," said Roland Warren with the National Fatherhood Initiative."

Father's Day: a challenge to absentee fathers

By Examiner.com 6/11/2009

"On Sunday, June 21, people all over the world will commemorate Father’s Day, a day set aside to honor men who have sacrificed to raise offspring.  But, I often wonder about how children that don’t have fathers really feel.  In the twenty-first century with our modern-day ideologies about responsible parenting, a lot of men fail to “father” their children.  Not unlike males in the animal kingdom, they “hit that,” and go on to the next victim of unbridled passion and unprotected sex.  Many men may never know the woman has conceived; and sadly, some women couldn’t identify their baby’s daddy without a paternity test!  Anonymous absentee dads have become more the norm than the exception, far removed from the Biblical genealogies that recorded who begot whom with accuracy and aplomb. While we honor those fathers that elected to honorably marry and rear children, my heart aches for children that don’t know their dads.  That missing link can make the difference between a child that is self-assured and feels secure and one that fails to connect emotionally and spiritually to those that offer love.  A mother or grandmother, uncle, cousin, or older brother can never replace a birth father’s love, given freely, self-sacrificially, and without reservation.  Mothers are not meant to be both Mom and Dad."

What Is a True Father?

By Michael H. Venish -- The Real Truth - Ohio 6/5/2009

"Being a father is one of the most rewarding and exciting responsibilities a man could experience. Despite society’s reluctance to admit it, fathers undergird everything that is a family. Yet the very foundation of the family is under tremendous stress and trauma. In the last 45 years, the United States has become a world leader in fatherless families, followed by Britain and other nations. Daniel Patrick Moynihan wrote in his report to the Lyndon B. Johnson presidential administration, “From the wild Irish slums of the 19th century Eastern seaboard, to the riot-torn suburbs of Los Angeles, there is one unmistakable lesson in American history: a community that allows a large number of young men to grow up in broken families, dominated by women, never acquiring any stable relationship to male authority, never acquiring any set of rational expectations about the future…that community asks for and gets chaos, crime, violence, unrest, disorder.”.."

Kelly Rutherford's Husband: I Wasn't Notified of Daughter's Birth

By Ken Lee -- People.com 6/9/2009

"The ill will from a divorce and custody battle between Kelly Rutherford and her husband has now apparently reached into the hospital delivery room. The Gossip Girl star welcomed her second child, daughter Helena, on Monday, but the actress's estranged husband, German entrepreneur Daniel Giersch, tells PEOPLE he was never notified of the birth, and instead read about it in online reports, some unfavorable toward him. "Media reports claiming that I neglected to attend my daughter's birth are total lies and fabrication," Giersch says in a statement. "I was never informed by Kelly about the birth of our daughter, nor was I invited to attend. In fact, I found out about it through Internet reports like everyone else. Although this sickens me, I am of course overjoyed that our baby was born healthy. I would've wanted nothing more than to hold our newborn daughter for a few moments, and I only seek to coparent both our children."

HAGELIN: Reliable dads deserve respect

By Rebecca Hagelin -- Special to the Washington Times 6/8/2009

"Recently I saw a MasterCard commercial in which a preteen son arrogantly "teaches" the father environmental lessons while grocery shopping. Right After the son shows Dad the silly Earth-preserving "importance" of buying a reusable grocery bag, the tag line appears: "Helping your dad become a better man? Priceless." Such subtle messages about the supremacy of children over their dads are now common. Turn on the television and watch just about any channel for one evening and a particularly disgusting pattern begins to emerge: The "dad" is often portrayed as wimpy, ignorant and doltish. Everyone is smarter and more mature than Dad is. Nearly everyone else is also more attractive and physically fit. You would think that all fathers have actually become Homer Simpson. The unmistakable message behind such carefully crafted ads and images is that dads are disposable - they don't really contribute much to the family other than being the brunt of jokes."

U program helps fragile new families beat the odds

By Gail Rosenblum -- Minneapolis Star Tribune - Minnesota

"...."We found that most of these couples are in romantic relationships and aspire to stay together," said project director Bill Doherty, Ph.D., professor in the U of M's Department of Family Social Science. The federally and state-funded "Minnesota Healthy Marriage and Responsible Fatherhood Initiative," was built upon the national Fragile Families Project, which Doherty said, "was a turning point in the way many of us think about unmarried, urban young couples with children. That project put to bed the notion that fathers don't give a rip and women don't know who the fathers are. "Still, the gap between aspirations and ability to carry out those aspirations is pretty high. We designed our project to fill that gap."...."

100th Anniversary of Father's Day Marks Local and National Commitment to Paternal Involvement

By Maggie Spain -- Cherry Creek News - Denver 5/28/2009

"Currently, 25 million American children are living apart from their fathers including two-thirds of African-American children. According to national research, children who grow up without fathers are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime; nine times more likely to drop out of school and 20 times more likely to end up in prison. Yet, as these grim statistics mount, a national trend is brewing to celebrate and encourage responsible fatherhood. This year on Father’s Day, groups across the country will hold symposiums, conferences and events to celebrate dad. In Denver, the Be There for Your Kids campaign will host the 2009 Colorado Fatherhood Rally on Saturday, June 20 in the Meadows at City Park. Beginning at 10:30 a.m., the Rally will include a fatherhood recognition program featuring Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, Jr., Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, other notable fathers and the 2009 Be There for Your Kids Awards winners. The Colorado Rally will also include a message from a rally taking place on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. The host organization for this event, the National Partnership for Community Leadership, has challenged more than one million fathers, fatherhood organizations and supporters across the country to come together and celebrate and encourage responsible fatherhood. Speakers for the event will include Ed Gordon, broadcaster and founder of Daddy’s Promise, U.S. Congressman Danny K. Davis and many more well- known fathers. President Barack Obama has also received an invitation to attend."

North Korea's Kim Jong Il Chooses Youngest Son as Heir

By Blaine Harden -- Washington Post 6/2/2009

"North Korea's ailing leader has chosen his youngest son as heir to the family dynasty that rules the secretive state, South Korea's intelligence service told lawmakers in Seoul. Kim Jong Un, 26, who attended a Swiss boarding school and reportedly admires basketball great Michael Jordan, is the third son of Kim Jong Il, the "Dear Leader" who suffered a stroke last summer and who has since appeared thin and frail. He is the grandson of the late Kim Il Sung, the "Great Leader" and founding dictator of North Korea. If Kim Jong Un does become the new leader -- and there are analysts who doubt the decision is final -- this second consecutive father-to-son handoff would be unique among nations that call themselves communist. There was no indication, however, that Kim Jong Il would be handing over power anytime soon."

Surviving: Layoffs put more dads in stay-at-home roles

By Brian Reisinger • Wausau Daily Herald • 5/23/2009

"...."One week we found out we were having a baby, and the next week, we found out we only had one income," Buksa, 40, said as his now 6-month-old daughter, Megan, peered about their living room in the Taylor County village of Rib Lake. Buksa is among a surging number of central Wisconsin residents, particularly men, who unexpectedly are becoming stay-at-home parents in the national recession. Their new role is a direct consequence of rising unemployment rates, which for March reached 12.1 percent in Wausau. Although men and women both have faced layoffs, industries that typically employ more men, such as housing and manufacturing, are struggling the most. The national unemployment rate among men was 10 percent in April, compared with 7.6 percent among women, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics. The rate for men has grown almost twice as rapidly as that of women since January. The recent growth in at-home fatherhood mirrors a larger social movement. With women taking on a larger role in the professional world in recent decades, experts say it's natural for more men to stay at home than in the past."

A divorced parent's dilemma: Leave kids to find work

By L.L. Braiser - Detroit Free Press - Michigan 5/26/2009

"Ray, a journeyman electrician, unemployed and desperate, left Macomb County two weeks ago for work in Oklahoma. It meant leaving his two daughters, the subjects of an upcoming custody battle with his soon-to-be ex-wife. "I would never, ever have left my children," he said. "But I had no work. I looked for seven months and couldn't get a callback. I couldn't sleep at night ... With no work, I wasn't doing my children any good." Ray, who asked that his last name not be used to protect his daughters' privacy, is among hundreds of divorced and divorcing parents in Michigan looking to leave the state to find work. In some cases, they also are seeking a reduction in the amount of child support they pay. The requests, once rare, are now becoming commonplace as Michigan's economy continues to crumble. For those who stay in Michigan, child support often comes out of their unemployment checks; the amount of child support withheld from unemployment payments jumped 135% in the last year."

Agencies support Fatherhood Initiative

By Beloit Daily News - Wisconsin 5/20/2009

"Several agency representatives from the Stateline Area were on hand in Madison recently when the Fatherhood Initiative was honored with the 12th Annual Governor's Excellence in Community Action Award. The award was presented during the Wisconsin Community Action Program Association annual meeting in Madison. The Stateline United Way provided $95,000 in start-up money for the pilot program in 2007. The funding was made possible because the annual Stateline United Way fundraising campaign had exceeded its goal. “We consider this to be a shared award and a program that would not have been possible without (Stateline United Way's) vision and leadership,” said Lisa Furseth, executive director of Community Action."

Number of Unwed Mothers Has Risen Sharply in U.S.

By Rob Stein and Donna St. George -- Washington Post 5/14/2009

"....The number of children being born out of wedlock has risen sharply in recent years, driven primarily by women in their 20s and 30s opting to have children without getting married. Nearly four out of every 10 births are now to unmarried women. "It's been a huge increase -- a dramatic increase," said Stephanie J. Ventura of the National Center for Health Statistics, which documented the shift in detail yesterday for the first time, based on an analysis of birth certificates nationwide. "It's quite striking." Although the report did not examine the reasons for the increase, Ventura and other experts cite a confluence of factors, including a lessening of the social stigma associated with unmarried motherhood, an increase in couples delaying or forgoing marriage, and growing numbers of financially independent women and older and single women deciding to have children on their own after delaying childbearing. "I think this is the tipping point," said Rosanna Hertz, a professor of sociology and women's studies at Wellesley College. "This is becoming increasingly the norm. The old adage that 'first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in the baby carriage' just no longer holds true.".."

Couples with children outside wedlock 'should be married by the State'

By John Bingham --Telegraph.co.uk - United Kingdom 4/30/2009

"Couples who have children outside wedlock should be automatically married by the State to discourage them from splitting up, a key government adviser is proposing. Prof Julian Le Grand, the architect of a clutch of New Labour policies such as baby bonds, is calling for marriage to be the legal "default" setting for new parents. Without having to undergo a public ceremony or take any vows, they should simply be regarded as married in law as soon as the child's birth is registered, Prof Le Grand, Tony Blair's former Downing Street health adviser, said. Those who later decide to separate would have to go to court to seek a divorce in exactly the same way as a couple who had married formally in church or a register office. The London School of Economics professor, who is also chairman of Health England, argued that the idea would make family units more secure."

Men eager to learn how to be real fathers

By TONYAA WEATHERSBEE - The Florida Times-Union 5/11/2009

"As the school day ended recently at St. Clair Evans Academy, and the children began to file out the doors, one class was just beginning — a class for men. These men had learned their ABCs long ago; what they needed to learn on this day was the basics on being a father. No one had taught them that. At least not until Ronnie Cage came along. Cage, 47, has been supplying those lessons since 2003, when he became a parent educator with the Jacksonville Children’s Commission. He’s been continuing those lessons as a contract manager and program associate with the commission, as well as through his consulting company."

Hopes rise for progress on fatherhood problems

By San Francisco Chronicle - CA, USA 5/5/2009

"With a centennial celebration of Father's Day coming next month, and a new president committed to supporting better parenting, liberals and conservatives alike say the political stars may be aligned for major progress in promoting responsible fatherhood. It's an issue that's been divisive in the past, even as research made clear that the estimated 24 million children growing up with absent fathers — a disproportionate number of them African-American — are at higher risk in regard to poverty, crime and other social problems. But the left-right divide over the government's role in solidifying such families appears to be narrowing at this stage of Barack Obama's presidency. "This is a watershed moment, to say the least," said Roland Warren, president of the National Fatherhood Initiative. "With President Obama — the first African-American husband and father in the White House — there's a unique opportunity here to draw attention to the issue." Numerous events are planned around Father's Day — ranging from policy symposiums to a National Rally for Responsible Fatherhood at the Lincoln Memorial. Obama, raised in the absence of his own father, has been invited to the rally and is expected to mark the day with an appeal for men to be more involved in their children's lives."

Bio-dad to Madonna: (Don't) Have Mercy

By Jovie Baclayon E-Online 5/2/2009

"...In an interview airing Monday on CBS' The Early Show, 15-year-old James Kambewa is once again voicing his opposition to Madonna's adoption bid for his 3-year-old daughter, Chifundo "Mercy" James. "I want to take care of her and I'm capable to take care of my baby," he says. "Mercy, she is a Malawian—so [I] need her to grow as a Malawian, as well with our culture." In the interview, Kambewa is wearing a necklace he made bearing his daughter’s name but says has never held or even met her in person. The little girl's birth mother died shortly after childbirth. Lucy Chekechiwa, Mercy’s maternal grandmother, says she, too, was initially opposed to the adoption but eventually gave in. “I did not want my granddaughter to be adopted,” she says, “but because they have been persistent enough, I have been forced to let my granddaughter go." On Monday, Team Madonna will make her appeal before Malawi's Chief Justice Lovemore Munlo. In April, a judge rejected the 50-year-old superstar's adoption request because she doesn't meet the minimum 18-month residency requirement."

The Age of the American Lust Child

By Armstrong Williams -- Opinion,The CuttingEdgeNews.com 4/27/2009

"Recently that the Centers for Disease Control has estimated that nearly forty percent of U.S. births in 2007 occurred outside of wedlock. That number is overall for the nation. It is one thing when teenagers and members of lower socioeconomic classes fall prey to this phenomenon. But the reality of out-of-wedlock births at such a high rate across the social gamut suggests that the problem has spread much wider than ever could have been imagined. This alarming number of out-of-wedlock births across age and socioeconomic sectors signals nothing less than the wholesale disintegration of our American family. Welcome to the dawn of the age of the American Lust Child. Some would question why it matters. What does society care whether or not children are born to wedded mothers at all? After all if the parents are together but not married, or single but wealthy enough to support the child, then no big deal right? Wrong. There is more to raising children than just food, clothing and shelter. There is the quintessential non-material connection that two parents provide that cannot be quantified in dollars and cents, but are just as essential for that child to grow up and become a productive member of society."

Father Absence and Poverty

By Terry Shelton --  Reunite Fatherhood Families - USA 4/29/2009

"..."Promoting responsible fatherhood…is one of the most important things we can do to reduce child poverty”  Former Vice President Al Gore at the National Fatherhood Initiative’s National Summit on Fatherhood in June, 2000. Father absence and poverty are strongly related.  Data shows that it’s more difficult to get fathers to provide financial support when they are not married to the mother and when they lack an emotional connection to their children. Children in father-absent homes are five times more likely to be poor.  In 2002, 7.8 percent of children in married-couple families were living in poverty, compared to 38.4 percent of children in female-houseolder familes. 1 Fourty-five percent of unmarried mothers in large U.S. cities are poor and another 28% are “near poor”, with incomes 200% below the poverty line. 2..."

Parental rights already being lost

By Bob Unruh -- World Net Daily 4/28/2009

"Supporters of a plan to amend the U.S. Constitution to include parental rights are warning moms and dads across the United States they already are losing their rights to make decisions regarding their children's health, education, welfare, finances, sex education, access to abortion and even leisure time. "The erosion is upon us," said Michael Farris, founder of the Home School Legal Defense Association, a college and a church and now a dedicated leader in the effort to change the U.S. Constitution through the amendment process to restore and protect parental rights."

Helping Dads

By The Post-Standard/Opinion - Syracuse.com – New York 4/21/2009

"For years, research has shown that fathers who are involved in their children's lives have a strong and lasting impact. The children's lives are affected in many critical ways, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families. Children with active fathers are more likely to grow up with healthy self-esteem, are better off financially and are less likely to drop out of school, get involved with crime or commit suicide. They are more likely to improve their test scores and develop good problem-solving skills. That is why a pilot program from the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance shows so much promise."

Father can be deprived of child's custody: SC

By The Hindu 4/19/2009

"The Supreme Court has ruled that custody of a minor can be given even to a maternal grandmother if the father, who is a natural guardian, is incapable of taking adequate care of the child. The apex court said though the law mandates that the father is the natural guardian of a child, the right at the same time is not absolute. "Ordinarily, under the Guardian and Wards Act, the natural guardians of the child have the right to the custody of the child, but that right is not absolute and the courts are expected to give paramount consideration to the welfare of the minor child," a bench of Justices Tarun Chatterjee and H L Dattu said. The apex court passed the ruling while granting custody of a minor girl Angha to her maternal grandmother Anjali Kapoor."

South Carolina program encourages fathers to use parenting skills

By Great Dad - California

"A community program that serves Anderson County in South Carolina has received a $25,000 grant from a national fatherhood organization in an effort to create more initiatives that teach fathers to be more engaged in the lives of their children. The grant comes from the National Fatherhood Initiative and will go towards the Fresh Start Community Development Corp to improve the home life and potentially reduce crime in the local area. According to Fresh Start, 93 percent of young criminal offenders in Anderson County did not have a father at home, the Independent Mail reports. It's the group's thinking that having a strong family could one day reduce the number of young adults embracing a life of crime."

Ethical questions over harvesting dead son's sperm

By Associated Press 4/11/2009

"Nikolas Colton Evans had talked about how much he wanted to have a child, but the 21-year-old died after he was punched and hit his head on the ground in a fight. That would have been the end of it, if it weren't for his determined mother, a court order and a urologist. Missy Evans has harvested her dead son's sperm and hopes to find a surrogate and one day raise her son's child. It's a decision that ethicists say raises troubling questions; one called the potential offspring a "replacement child." Evans isn't concerned about what others might think. She says she is only doing what her son would have wanted. "He would love me so much for doing this," she said."

Out-of-wedlock births hit record high

By CNN.com 4/8/2009

""Had she been born a generation earlier, Kim Hoffman might have had a shotgun wedding. As it turned out, she and Steve Miller took the time to plan their dream nuptials -- outdoors, on an organic farm, and with their 10-month-old daughter in tow. A pre-marriage birth certainly wasn't what her father wanted for his only daughter, said Hoffman, of Oakland, California. But seven months into her relationship with Miller, the unplanned pregnancy simply changed life's course. "We would have headed down this path. The pregnancy just accelerated things," she said of the couple's cohabitation, the birth of Sadie and their 2005 wedding. "It was the way it was meant to be." Along with magazine-cover grabbers like Angelina Jolie and Bristol Palin, Hoffman, today a 39-year-old mother of three, is part of a now record-breaking trend of women who give birth outside of wedlock."

By CNN.com 3/23/2009

"Below is an excerpt from CNN commentator Jack Cafferty's new book, "Now or Never." Jack appears daily in "The Situation Room" on CNN from 4 to 7 p.m. ET. I never presumed to have any more answers about being a parent than anybody else. There are no perfect parents, perfect kids, perfect families -- only degrees of dysfunction. You get up in the morning and do the best you can. At the end of the day you say, "Okay, that wasn't so bad, let's try it again tomorrow." Some of my instincts were pretty good and some of them were awful. I did stay engaged and didn't say to hell with being a father when my first marriage ended. ...."

I thought we’d never see the girls again

By Gillian Harris TimesOnline 3/22/2009

"....Three years after Susan died, her husband, Joe, and his new girlfriend announced they were moving from Glasgow to Liverpool. Jimmy and Margaret, who had given much of their time to caring for the children, were sad to see them go but agreed to visit and have the girls to stay. It wasn’t long before the arrangements began to unravel. Visits were cancelled on the flimiest of pretexts. Meetings that did take place were stressful and often cut short. Afterwards Jimmy and Margaret would drive back to Glasgow in tears, fearing that they were being pushed out of their grandchildren’s lives. “It was like losing Susan all over again,” says Margaret. “It was devastating to think we might lose touch with Nicola and Joanne, too. Our two sons would say, ‘You don’t have to put yourself through this’. But people don’t realise the bond that exists between grandparents and their grandchildren. There was no way we could let them go.”...."

US births break record; 40 pct out-of-wedlock

By Mike Stobbe, AP Medical Writer, Yahoo News – 3/19/2009

"Remember the baby boom? No, not the one after World War II. More babies were born in the United States in 2007 than any other year in the nation's history — and a wedding band made increasingly little difference in the matter. The 4,317,119 births, reported by federal researchers Wednesday, topped a record first set in 1957 at the height of the baby boom. ....The birth rate rose slightly for women of all ages, and births to unwed mothers reached an all-time high of about 40 percent, continuing a trend that started years ago. More than three-quarters of these women were 20 or older. For a variety of reasons, it's become more acceptable for women to have babies without a husband, said Duke University's S. Philip Morgan, a leading fertility researcher."
